How to play
- Your dinosaur runs automatically and speeds up the longer you last.
- Jump the cacti and duck under the birds.
- Any collision ends the run immediately.
- The score is the distance you covered, and your best is kept in your browser.
Playing it better
- Jump late rather than early. Jumping too soon is the most common way to land on a cactus.
- Hold the jump key for tall cactus groups and tap it for single ones.
- Birds come at three heights. Only the lowest needs a duck, the highest can be ignored.
- Watch the horizon rather than your dinosaur. It gives you an extra half second to react.
About Dino Run
This is the runner from the Chrome offline page, the one that appears when a page fails to load, taken from the Chromium source and packaged for the open web. It is released under the same BSD licence as the browser code it came from, which is why it can be hosted here rather than only reachable by pulling out your network cable.
The design is one button deep and unusually well tuned. Speed increases steadily with distance, so the difficulty is a smooth curve rather than a set of levels, and obstacles are spaced so there is always a fair jump available. Nothing in it is random enough to feel unfair, which is exactly why a bad run feels like your fault.
The subtlety is in the jump. It is variable height, so a tap clears a single cactus while a held press clears a tall cluster, and the difference matters more as the speed climbs. Ducking exists for the birds, and learning that only the low ones actually require it saves you from ducking into a cactus you could have jumped.
It works with one key, loads in a second, and a run lasts anywhere from ten seconds to several minutes. That combination has made it one of the most played games in the world, mostly by people waiting for their connection to come back.
